Humboldt Broncos lose first regular-season game since deadly bus crash

HUMBOLDT, Sask. – The Humboldt Broncos came up short in their first regular-season game since a team bus crash that killed 16.

The Nipawin Hawks, last year’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions, rode two late second-period goals to a 2-1 victory.

Humboldt’s lone goal came on a five-on-three power play early in the second.

It was a night marked by sadness, but also celebration as the team emerged from tragedy with the help of many of the players who survived the deadly crash.

Before puck drop, a moment of silence was held.

Eight of the surviving players dropped the puck in the ceremonial faceoff.

Brayden Camrud and Derek Patter were both in the game, the only two players who were in the crash and are back on the Broncos this season. Camrud and Patter received standing ovations from the crowd.

Following the game, the Broncos held a ceremony to individually honour each victim. The number of every player who was lost has been retired.
