Horgan not ready to commit to changing Daylight Saving Time

WHISTLER (NEWS 1130) – Now that delegates at the UBCM have voted in favour of getting rid of Daylight Saving Time in B.C., the premier is not ready to make it happen just yet.

John Horgan said Friday he has been speaking to his ministers about how the changes may affect tourism.

“I had certainly been looking at this very closely. I’ve talked to particularly our minister of tourism, because it has an impact on north-south travel. Washington state, of course, has no plans to change from Daylight Saving time, nor does Oregon, nor does California,” he said.

He adds more consultation is needed with various stakeholders before any changes are made.

“To have the UBCM pass a resolution will give us an opportunity to go back and talk to our neighbours — north and south — because we already have the hour difference with Alberta. Saskatchewan, of course, does not believe in Daylight Saving Time, so this gives us more ammunition to talk about how we should proceed and we’ll talk to citizens about that as well.”

A year after promising to consider doing away with DST, it seems it’s an issue he won’t be able to forget quickly.

“It is an issue that vexes people. I hear about it all the time,” he said. “People don’t want to spring forward, they don’t want to fall back.”

Earlier today, delegates at the UBCM in Whistler voted 52 per cent in favour of getting rid of DST.
