Jagmeet Singh makes run for Burnaby-South official after accepting nomination

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – The leader of the federal NDP announced plans to run in the Burnaby-South byelection weeks ago and after accepting his party’s nomination on Saturday, Jagmeet Singh has made it official.

Despite not being from Burnaby or even BC, Singh says he’s developed a love for the province and is excited to accept the nomination. He adds his platform will run on what he calls Liberal shortcomings and focus on housing, affordability and the environment.

“We’ve got senior citizens in our country that are worried about where they’re gonna live the next month the don’t have a place to call home. That’s just not acceptable,” he told reporters.

“Some of it’s going to be income supports for people who can’t find a place to live, some of it’s going to be supportive cooperative housing as a solution to provide people access to housing that’s not subject to the incredibly unsustainable rising costs of housing.”

Singh says he’s been attempting to find a home or apartment of his own in the city, but adds it’s been very difficult with limited availability and sky high prices.

A date for the byelection has not been set yet. Singh is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to not delay and call the byelection, which is being triggered by Kennedy Stewart’s run for Mayor of Vancouver.

The NDP party has been on shaky grounds after Singh refused to change his decision on outing Saskatchewan MP Erin Weir over allegations of harassment. It’s a decision Singh stands by.

“As a society, we know that for too long workplaces have not been safe, that women have not felt safe in their workplaces and I’m committed as leader to doing my part to ensuring we don’t go back,” he says.

“We’re not going backwards, we’re going forward. Workplaces have to be safe.”

Singh says his next steps include building his team and campaigning in the community in the weeks ahead.
