Man arrested after reportedly failing to stop at border, leading police on chase

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A man in his 20s has been arrested after police say he allegedly drove across the border without stopping.
Vancouver Police was alerted by the Surrey RCMP of the man driving a blue pick-up truck with Oregon plates, who “was speeding towards Vancouver,” on Saturday morning.
Around 8:30 a.m., the VPD says officers spotted the truck in the area of Oak Street and West 16th Avenue. When police used their lights and sirens to pull the man over, they say he refused to stop and sped off.
Police pursued the truck, which ended up crashing into a Mazda sedan and then into an empty store in the area of West 10th Avenue and Alma Street. The driver of the Mazda was not seriously hurt, and the man in the pick-up was arrested.
“The radio equipment used by first responders across the Lower Mainland allows them to talk to each other during emergencies,” Constable Jason Doucette says. “Efficient communication between agencies led to the swift arrest of this man who made unauthorized entry into Canada.”
It’s unclear why the man failed to stop at the border, or who he is.
Vancouver Police say they will be recommending charges relating to dangerous driving and causing a police pursuit.
“Additional charges are anticipated as the investigation progresses,” police add.
