Fire that destroyed Agassiz farm ruled accidental

AGASSIZ (NEWS 1130) – A fire that destroyed much of a dairy farm and killed two cows in Agassiz overnight has been ruled as accidental.

Crews continue to clean up at the farm on Cameron at Limbert Roads.

Wayne Dyer with the fire department says the fire started in a silo.

“The corn silage that they put in there the other day, it heated up and set some hay on fire which basically burnt the bunker silo, which was a wooden structure, and it burnt it down,” he says.

The fire then spread to nearby structures including two barns which were destroyed.

Crews estimate the fire began around 10 p.m.

“It was seen about close to eleven o’clock when someone finally spotted it. It had grown to a size that somebody saw it.”

Dyer says crews are making sure no hot spots are left.
