“The call did initiate from a lifeguard in the facility thinking they had smelled a type of gas in the building,” says Assistant Fire Chief Rob Aldcorn.

He says a Hazmat team is now on scene, as well as Fortis BC and BC Ambulance.

“At this point, we have not had an opportunity to identify what’s going on there right now,” Aldcorn says. “They’re going to do an assessment with some monitoring devices and determine what it is. The city does have vital information on all these facilities so they’ll go through the process of determining what chemicals are on site and deal with them appropriately.”

It’s unknown when the centre will reopen, but Aldcorn says it may be a while.

He says so far no one has been treated for illness.
