It has been suggested Chilliwack city councillor Sam Waddington spent too much money in 2017

CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) – Police are looking into the expenses of a Chilliwack city councillor, who is hoping to become mayor next month.

It’s been suggested Sam Waddington spent too much money because he submitted more than $17,000 worth of receipts for 2017.

RCMP Corporal Mike Rail with the Upper Fraser Valley regional detachment is careful not to say an investigation is underway.

“We can confirm that we have received a referral from the City of Chilliwack and we are currently reviewing the information to determine the appropriate steps,” Cpl. Rail said. “We’re not releasing any further information other than we can confirm we have received a referral from the City of Chilliwack.”

Waddington hasn’t responded yet to our request for an interview, but city staff have confirmed an independent auditor has been hired.

The 28-year-old is one of the candidates running against mayoral incumbent Sharon Gaetz, who claims her expenses totaled $7,000 last year.
