Three deadly crashes, including a hit and run in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A man is dead after a hit and run in Surrey last night.

A 51-year-old man, believed to be from Surrey, was killed when he was crossing Highway 10 at 152nd Street at around 8:15 p.m. Thursday.

He was walking on the eastbound lanes on the south side of the highway when an SUV hit him. The driver did not stop.

Seconds later, the victim was hit by a second car. That driver did stop and is cooperating with police.

Staff Sergeant Murray Hedderson said visibility is considered a factor.

“It’s probably all part of the mix. They’re still investigating exactly what occurred. At this point, I can’t tell you if there’s anything else — other than visibility and the person not crossing in a crosswalk — that are factors involved.”

Investigators are looking for a white SUV with a “boxy” appearance.

Police are asking for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area last night to give them a call.

A man is dead after a crash in Delta Thursday night.

It happened around 6 p.m.

“A Ford 150 had collided with the median divider at the Highway 17A exit northbound from Highway 17 eastbound,” explained Cris Leykauf, who speaks for police.

“The Delta Fire Department also attended. They used the jaws of life to remove the driver from the vehicle. Despite their efforts, unfortunately the driver died at the scene.”

The victim was a Delta man who was in his 50s. He was the only person in the vehicle.

Leykauf said it’s too early to say if the weather conditions or other things like speed may have been factors in this crash.

The highway was closed for hours between Tsawwassen and Ladner.

Meanwhile, Lougheed Highway in Burnaby was also closed for hours, due to a deadly collision near Underhill Avenue.

A pickup truck went off the road. The driver was killed. Two other people were hurt.

Police say weather conditions likely played a role in this crash.
