Sarah Braaten says she spends five hours commuting for 3.5 hours of schooling

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – Sarah Braaten is the latest winner in our Vancouver’s Worst Commute contest. The SFU grad school student’s daily odyssey takes her from her home in East Abbotsford to Burnaby.

My commute consists of an hour (sometimes 1.5 hours) long drive to 200th Street (with the construction mess and accidents every single day along the freeway). I park at Carvolth Exchange and take the 555 Bus to Lougheed Centre and then get off the bus, and get onto the SkyTrain to Production/University.

This can take anywhere between 35 – 65 minutes. I get off the SkyTrain and take another bus (the 145) up Burnaby mountain, which is always overflowing and it takes about 15-35 minutes up the hill depending on how many stops the bus makes.

The commute home is even worse. Same route, same amount of transfers. Except it always takes nearly 3 hours to get home during rush-hour.

Braaten says it all adds up to five hours of commuting for 3.5 hours of school.

Go to Grad school everyone said. They never warned me about the commute!

She says she’d drive but gas and parking are too expensive, and the SFU lots are always full.

Sarah gets $500 for her pain, thanks to our partners at Toyo Tires. If you think you should be our next winner, click here for details on how to enter.
