Trudeau calls Cabinet meeting Sunday night

OTTAWA – Federal cabinet ministers have been called into a late-night NAFTA meeting with the prime minister. Multiple sources tell The Canadian Press the cabinet was to meet around 10 p.m. (7.p.m. Pacific Time) at Justin Trudeau’s office across the street from Parliament Hill.

The Trudeau government has been up against a midnight deadline trying to secure a place in what is, so far, a Mexico-U.S. trade deal.

One of the latest sticking points has been what to do about steel and aluminum tariff, auto tariffs if Canada signs on to the pact.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. David MacNaughton spent the day in Ottawa taking part in a last-minute push to get Canada into a trilateral free trade deal with the U-S and Mexico on the eve of a key congressional deadline.
