Wintry conditions in parts of the B.C. Interior

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s already feeling like winter in parts of the Interior, with snow reported in areas including Kamloops, Clinton. There are also slushy conditions in Merritt.

Ralph Fossum is a councillor with the District of 100 Mile House, and estimates about eight or nine inches are on the ground there.

“It’s caught us off-guard,” he said. “We don’t normally get snow — might get one little dusting around Halloween — but this is much sooner. Most people do not have their snow tires on.”

Fossum said ploughs have been out on Highway 97, adding it is more wet than snowy there now.

Bob Gilowski with VSA Highway Maintenance, which looks after the Coquihalla and the Okanagan Connector said snow or mixed rain and snow could fall this evening.

“Expect winter-related driving conditions and either adjust travel plans or adjust speed accordingly.”

Winter tires are now mandatory on most highways.

“At this time of year, there’s the requirement for people have their winter tires when they’re travelling over the high mountain passes. Highway 5 and Highway 97C are two of those highways that do have that requirement.”
