FortisBC to give bill credits to flood and fire evacuees

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Some FortisBC customers impacted by flooding or wildfires over the last six months will be seeing some financial relief.

The 2,623 gas and electricity customers that were evacuated will be seeing bill credits to account for the energy they were charged for while they were evacuated.

Dawn Mehrer with FortisBC says the credits will be applied to their accounts in the next few months.

“It certainly pales in comparison with the other things they’ve had to deal with, but it was something we could do and we had the power to do. We think that you can run a business and do the right thing for people at the same time.”

The utility applied to the B.C. Utilities Commission in August for permission to allow the credit, which they approved in September.
