B.C. Ferries expected to be very busy over long weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re planning on taking the ferry over the weekend, you’ll want to give yourself extra time and expect big crowds to be joining you on the trip.

B.C. Ferries has scheduled over 80 extra sailings for the long weekend to keep up with demand on the Metro Vancouver to Victoria route. Vessels will start leaving as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m.

Deb Marshall with B.C. Ferries says it’s best to book a reservation ahead of time to avoid delays.

“We may see situations where we reach our maximum number of passengers that we can carry on a vessel over the long weekend at the peak times on the major routes,” she says.

She suggests walking on the ferry rather than taking your car to avoid some of the wait.

Even then, there might not be enough room for everyone.

“Foot passengers are a great way to travel on the long weekends. This does tend to be the busiest weekend for the the year or foot passengers,” she says. “I would encourage anybody travelling as a foot passenger, make sure you get there earlier than you normally would to secure your spot on that sailing.”
