Expect delays if your long weekend plans include cross-border trips

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s a peak travel weekend for many people across the country and Canada Border Services Agency has some reminders.

Travellers are always urged to plan ahead, and even think about when you want to cross into the U.S.

“On long weekends there are higher than normal volumes,” the CBSA’s Luke Reimer says. “Often, the Sunday and Monday in the afternoon and evening is when we’re seeing those volumes build up. So if you can, cross in the morning.”

The CBSA is also reminding everyone to be well prepared when they get to the border; have your travel documents ready, know what you’ve bought and what’s in your car, know what your exemption limits are, and know about new surtaxes.

You’re also being reminded that marijuana isn’t legal yet. Even if it was, it’s still illegal to cross national borders with it.

Eventually, the new trilateral trade deal announced earlier this week — the USMCA — will mean you can bring back $150 worth of goods without paying duty. However, don’t think you’re covered by that just yet — it’s not in effect until the deal is ratified.
