Burnaby RCMP share video of suspects in tire slashing spree

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Mounties in Burnaby are hoping you can help them identify two men responsible for slashing tires to over 100 vehicles over the long weekend.

Police were called Monday morning to the area of 12th Ave. and Mary Ave. after people woke up and discovered their tires had been slashed overnight. Several other cars were targeted in the area of 10th Ave. and 18th St.

RCMP say in total, up to 105 vehicles were damaged.

Some people heard tires being punctured as early as 2 a.m. Monday, but they did not call police.

Surveillance footage shows two young white men or teens wearing dark-hooded tops.

“This vandalism has come with a great cost to the affected residents,” said Staff Sergeant Major John Buis. “The sheer quantity of vehicles involved is shocking… today we want the public to take good look at the images we’re releasing and to contact us if they recognize the suspects.”

Buis says a tire can cost as low as $150, with a truck tire costing as high as over $1,000.

“We’d have to individually look at each person’s complaint to figure out any kind of cost, but we’rte looking in the neighborhood of $100,000 when you tabulate everything,” Buis tells NEWS 1130. “Not only is there the cost of replacing the tire, but also if there is more than one tire being damaged, the people have to tow the vehicle.”

If you have any information, you’re asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
