Unsung Hero: Local woman helps make coats for the homeless

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – Congratulations to our latest Unsung Hero, Carolyn Wharton of White Rock. She was nominated for the award by Ann Thibault. Take a look at her story:

Carolyn Wharton started a “Coats for the Homeless” project 17 years ago. She organized a group of ladies, from Star of the Sea Parish, White Rock, who were sewers and another group that were knitters. Together, they sew — from scratch — 25 four-layered coats, with carrying pouches that tie to the bottom of the coat, at night, to form a sleeping bag.

The hooded coats are all seam-sealed for waterproofing and the inside pocket contains various hygiene items for the recipients, while the two outside pockets contain a toque, mitts and scarves from the knitting group.

The coats are distributed in the DTE and in Langley, with a few being sent to the Victoria area. Funds are raised for the project by selling fair trade chocolate and coffee.

The project started again with a “cutting bee” on September 15 and continues each Monday evening in the gym at Star of the Sea School in South Surrey, until each coat is completed, which is usually around the end of November.

Carolyn should be recognized as an Unsung Hero.

Alpine Credits is acknowledging Carolyn with $500 to say thanks. It’s also donating $1,000 to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.
