NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – A lockdown that lasted a couple of hours at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster overnight was due to reports of someone who may have had a gun.
New Westminster Police Chief Dave Jones says witnesses saw the person leaving the SkyTrain and heading to an underground parking lot.
“Witnesses and some video appeared to confirm that there was a suspicious object. We can’t say for sure, because the person was never located… as to what the item was.”
Late Tuesday night, armed police surrounded the area with as many as 15 police vehicles responding to the scene.
“Erring on the side of caution and ensuring safety… we did a thorough and exhaustive search of the area , but was unable to locate any individual. There were no other offences recorded or reported to us,” says Jones.
Investigators will spend the day looking through surveillance footage, in an effort to identify the person and what they may have been carrying.
