VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The man accused of killing a 13-year-old girl in Burnaby’s Central Park last summer is expected back in court Friday.

The girl’s body was found in a wooded area of the park on July 19, 2017. It became one of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team’s largest investigations in its history.

Ibrahim Ali, 28, was arrested in early September, 2018. He is charged with first-degree murder.

Ali is a Syrian national who came to Canada as a refugee. He is a Canadian permanent resident.

Before his last court appearance in September, a group of protesters called for more background checks for refugees.

Those protesters were also met by members of the Syrian community who had set up a vigil, in support of the girl’s family.
