VPD close to making arrest after 150 wigs for sick kids were stolen

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There’s an encouraging update following a heartless crime in Vancouver last month.

Police say they are inching closer to making an arrest after someone stole 150 wigs destined for kids with cancer at BC Children’s Hospital from a wig shop on West Broadway.

VPD Sgt. Jason Robillard says they’re past the part of the investigation where they’re hunting for surveillance footage and searching for evidence. Now, they’re writing up and carrying out search warrants as they zero in on their main suspect.

“We definitely have an idea,” says Robillard. “Our officers have made quite a bit of headway on this and are quite far down this investigation. So hopefully, it comes to fruition here very shortly. Our hope is to [hold] someone accountable for this, have criminal charges come forward, and recover all, if not, as many as we can of these wigs.”

Once caught, charges of break and enter and theft would be recommended against the suspect or suspects.

The wigs were stolen in the early hours of Sept. 7, 2018. Some of the wigs were recovered less than a week later, after they were found in a bag in the hallway of a Downtown Eastside hotel.

However, Cindy Yip, co-owner of the Eva and Co. Wigs, tells NEWS 1130 some of the items that were returned were too dirty to use. But there is a silver lining:

“We’ve had a lot of support, a lot of positive support, a lot of donations and a lot of hair,” says Yip.

She admits families that were hoping to get the hair have been left disappointed but are patient and grateful they will eventually get what they need.

Yip adds they’ve had to start from the beginning to re-make all of the 150 wigs that were stolen, but expect to have everything completed and delivered in the next couple of weeks.

All of the wigs are made from real human hair and are valued at $2,500 each.

If you are interested in donating hair to help, you can find more information on the company’s website.
