Debit transactions will be available on board BC Ferries for a two-month trial starts Thursday, Oct. 17

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Starting tomorrow, you can use your debit card on all BC Ferries vessels sailing between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.

Darin Guenette is the Public Affairs Manager with BC Ferries. He says debit will be available for a two-month trial.

Over the past few months, they have been working on making sure the connectivity technology needed for instant debit payment is up to speed. He says the payments now have a “high rate of reliability.”

“We’ve got it figured out,” he says. “What we’ll do is see how it goes over the next couple months. We know a lot of customers are keen to try it.”

The trial starts tomorrow, but it’s already working today on one ship, the Spirit of British Columbia.

Guenette says customers have been keen to use debit, and they will be closely watching how this goes.

“Essentially at the end of the two months, what we’ll want to do is take a look and see exactly how many vessels and which routes we can bring in debit payments,” he says.

Debit will only be available on board, not at the terminals.
