Vancouver saw highest volume of cruise ship passengers since 2010

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – This year is being dubbed a very successful year for cruises in Vancouver.

Danielle Jang with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority says Canada Place saw the highest volume of passengers in eight years.

“With more than 900,000 passengers arriving in Vancouver on 243 cruise ship visits, this is about a seven per cent increase in volumes compared to 2017,” she says.

Jangs says the increase is also partly because of ships continuing to get bigger.

“We welcomed the Norwegian Bliss which is the largest ship to come to Vancouver which had more than 4,000 passengers,” she notes. “And in May, we made history with the arrival of the 25-millionth passenger through the port of Vancouver.”

The Norwegian Bliss was so large that it came about three metres close to the Lions Gate Bridge and had to come in during low tide. The ship had the capacity to accommodate 6,000 people.

The cruise ship season ends on Friday with the departure of the Emerald Princess at 4:30 p.m.
