Port Alberni’s Twin City Brewing wins Best in Show at BC Beer Awards

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Late Bloomer, a specialty fruit beer from Port Alberni’s Twin City Brewing, stood out on a list of over 1,000 entries in the 9th annual BC Beer Awards last weekend.

Awards director Chester Carey says sampling all those beers is a huge task and it gets bigger every year. In fact, he says this year was their biggest ever with 109 breweries from all over the province were represented at the Croatian Cultural Centre in East Vancouver.

“I think at peak we had something like 36 judges all judging at one time but that many beers have to be spread out over three days and multiple sessions on each of those days,” Carey says.

“It can make people aware of some excellent beers being brewed by breweries that they might not have heard of, or may have had a different beer form that wasn’t necessarily to their liking and they’ve since sort of passed them over.”

Carey says beers are judged by aroma, appearance, taste, of course, and the overall impression of the brew.

“What you’re looking for in each of those sections is going to be very different for an Imperial Stout versus a Belgian Wit beer versus a North American pale ale,” he explains. “All of those are going to have sort of a very different criteria what you’d be looking for and what you’d be expecting the beer to taste like.”

Vancouver-based 33 Acres was named Brewery of the Year, while Sooke Brewing was named Rookie of the Year. A full list of winners can be found at the BC Beer Awards website.
