MP Sheila Malcolmson to seek BC NDP nomination in Nanaimo by-election

NANAIMO (NEWS 1130) – An NDP MP on Vancouver Island is hoping to leave federal politics in favour of a seat in the B.C. Legislature.

Sheila Malcolmson has represented Nanaimo-Ladysmith since 2015. But with Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog winning Saturday’s mayoral race in that city, Malcolmson is now seeking the BC NDP nomination in that riding.

Krog is backing Malcolmson to take over his provincial job.

“I have seen Sheila in action. She is dedicated, hard-working, and deeply committed to the people of Nanaimo,” he said in a news release.

The by-election in Nanaimo is a critical one, as the BC NDP needs to hold onto this seat to secure its position as a minority government in this province. Should the B.C. Liberals win, the party would have the same number of votes in the legislature as the NDP/Green alliance.

There’s no word on when the by-election will take place, but Premier John Horgan has promised that it will happen before the budget is tabled in February.
