Horgan and Wilkinson will debate proportional representation

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Premier John Horgan says he’s accepted Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson’s challenge for a public debate on electoral reform, and he’s ready to go whenever the TV networks can agree on a date.

John Horgan insists he wants to do anything he can to make sure voter participation is strong.

“There seems to be a lot of excitement about this for those who are enthusiastic about proportional representation and the prospect of having an ability to make sure that every vote counts, so that you can go and vote for something rather than against something,” he says. “I think people are looking forward to that.”

As for when people can expect to see the much-talked about televised debate on electoral reform between him and Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson, he says the timing has never been about him.

“It’s never been about me. It’s been about the consortium of networks picking a date,” he says. “Why Mr. Wilkinson is so exercised and obsessed about hanging out with me when he can hang out with me in the legislature every day, but I’m ready to go whenever the television networks tell us they’ve got a time.”

Whether or not there is enough public interest in watching the debate is unclear, however Horgan says he wants to do anything he can to encourage would-be voters to inform themselves and mail in their ballots.
