NEWS 1130 Worst Commute winner stays with family to avoid traffic

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The latest winner in our Vancouver’s Worst Commute contest says her journey between Vancouver and Ladner should take about a half hour.

Instead, Michelle Porter says she’s stuck in her car for closer to two hours.

Because Porter travels against the flow during the commute, she only has access to one lane as she heads through the Massey Tunnel.

“It’s usually always backed up, and then when I go home at night going north, it’s huge back ups,” she explains. “Sometimes I can stay in that tunnel lineup for an hour and a half, sometimes it takes me two hours to get home from Ladner to Vancouver.”

So how does she cope? Porter says she chooses not to go home for a few days a week.

“It’s so bad that what happens is I do it Monday morning and then I stay with my mom in White Rock Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night and then I go back on Thursday night to Vancouver just because the traffic is so bad.”

She says she tries not to get too upset about her traffic issues, and tells NEWS 1130 she sometimes just uses the time spent in traffic to think.

Michelle gets $500 for her pain, thanks to our partners at Toyo Tires. If you think you should be our next winner, click here for details on how to enter.
