Rescued Steller sea lion taken into Vancouver Aquarium care dies

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) –  There is a sad update to a story we brought you last week from the Vancouver Aquarium.

Ukee the Steller sea lion has died, two weeks after he was found with gunshot wounds on a rocky shoreline in Ucluelet. The animal was put down on Thursday.

“He wasn’t responding to treatment, and his condition had taken a significant downturn in the last two days,” said Dr. Martin Haulena, head veterinarian at the Vancouver Aquarium.

“At this point we had to evaluate his quality of life. Although we are disappointed we couldn’t return him to full health, we are glad we could end his suffering and make his final days more comfortable. I am so proud of the team for the incredible care they gave him.”

The sea lion, which was estimated to be eight to 10 years old and between 300 and 350 kg, was found severely emaciated and taken to the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre for treatment.
