Vancouver fans prepare to say goodbye to Whitecaps star headed for Bayern

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Fans of the Vancouver Whitecaps will say goodbye to the club’s teenage superstar this weekend.

Alphonso Davies will put on his Whitecaps jersey for the final time when the ‘Caps take on the Portland Timbers at B.C. Place on Sunday.

Perry Solkowski with Sportsnet 650 says he knew Davies was special when he first took to the pitch as a 15-year-old.

“He sees things and watches the best do it, and then he goes on the training pitch and he tries it, and he’s successful. And then he goes on to the playing field, and he tries it, and he’s successful.”

The now-17-year-old forward is moving on to play in Germany next year.

Solkowski says people will be watching to see what becomes of Davies as he takes on the best of the best in soccer, all while representing not just this city, but also Canada.

“He has been incredible in what he has done, especially in the last three or four months when he knows where he’s going. He’s got some money for a family that has struggled, and their story of why they came here as refugees and the confidence that a 17-year-old has, it’s been amazing,” Solkowski adds.

The Edmonton-raised footballer is headed to Bayern Munich, which signed Davies this past summer for an MLS record transfer fee.
