Rainfall warning for parts of Lower Mainland

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – More rain is on the way.

A rainfall warning has been issued for all of Metro Vancouver and parts of the Fraser Valley.

Environment Canada says total rainfall accumulations of 50 to 80 millimetres are expected over the next 24 hours. Downpours may cause flash floods in certain areas, and even landslides on vulnerable slopes.

A rainfall warning has also been issued for the Howe Sound region.

There are a number of issues local municipalities will be watching for due to this heavy rain, among them localized flooding, or in areas with slopes, a higher risk of landslides.

“We’ve been out over the last few days making sure our drainage intakes are clear, clearing our critical catch basins,” said Brad Lofgren with the City of Coquitlam, noting the number of leaves on the streets could add to the challenge.

“We do ask for residents’ assistance as much as possible to keep catch basins around their property clear if it’s safe to do so.”

Forecasters say the “subtropical plume of moisture” is expected to bring rain throughout the day on Thursday and into the overnight period.

Things should ease off by Friday morning.
