This weekend’s time change won’t be the last in B.C., premier confirms

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – That extra hour of sleep you’re getting this weekend will be taken back next spring. Sunday’s time change won’t be the last for most British Columbians.

“We have no plans to change Daylight Saving Time at this point,” Premier John Horgan said on Thursday. This is despite hearing many complaints about how the twice-a-year switch disrupts sleep patterns.

“Only a parent would come to that conclusion — that will be awake even earlier on Sunday,” he said.

“We’ve looked into this … and I’ve received literally thousands of interventions from the public on this question. I know it’s a passionate issue.”

He says virtually every other part of the West Coast of North America goes by seven hours from Greenwich Mean Time — and that’s where most of B.C. will remain for now. Some communities in the easternmost part of B.C. already remain on Standard Time year-round.

It’s been over a year since Horgan agreed to consider getting rid of Daylight Saving Time. Now, he says it doesn’t make sense.

“There are complications to our trading arrangements. There are complications to [not] being on the same time as the people you’re dealing with in the business day. We have not heard overwhelming support for this from the business community — for example.”

In September, delegates at the Union of BC Municipalities Convention voted 52 per cent in favour of doing away with time changes.
