It’s time to check yourself: inaugural Vancouver Movember Undie Run happens Sunday

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – They’re running in their underwear, and not much else, for a good cause.  The inaugural Vancouver Movember Undie Run takes over the streets of Olympic Village on Sunday.

Participants run two kilometres, in a pair of Saxx underwear, down West 2nd Avenue, over the Cambie Bridge, and on the seawall back to Brewhall on East 2nd Avenue.  Despite the puns, there is a serious message behind the event.

“Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer for young men aged 15 and 39,” explains Mitch Hermansen with the Movember Foundation. “Despite it being the most common form of cancer for young men, actually, most guys don’t know that.”

He hopes guys get to know their testicles. “70 per cent of guys either never have or don’t know how to check for testicular cancer,” Hermansen explains. “Women are phenomenal examples of taking care of their health. They do the self-check breast examinations, but guys, we don’t seem to do that with our testicles.”

He adds self-checks should become routine. “Do it regularly.  It should feel normal…but if something feels strange or painful, you go to the doctor’s and get it checked out.  Simple as that.”

There are number of perks to taking part in the undie run.  You get to keep that pair of Saxx underwear you run in, there’s also a swag bag, and a drink ticket for the post-run festivities.

Registration is at Brewhall at Noon and the run itself gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
