Emergency and hazmat crews called to New West apartment building

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – An apartment building in New Westminster is still behind yellow police tape, as investigators prepare to go back into the structure later this morning.

Police and firefighters swooped into the neighbourhood, in the area of Carnarvon and Elliott Streets, Friday night, suspecting they had discovered some sort of drug lab.

People who live in the apartment building have had to find somewhere else to sleep, while police keep watch over the suspected lab.

Alita Kippan lives in the are and says she saw people in hazmat suits going into the building.

“They came out after twenty-ish minutes, and the fire department hosed them off completely,” she tells NEWS 1130.

Trevor Morgan gave us a call and told us what he saw: “basically the building is wrapped around in caution tape. There’s six cop cars there… there’s undercover cops, and the street is completely shut down.”

He said the apartment building was evacuated, and that a neighbour saw a paramedic being hosed off by a firefighter.

We’re waiting to hear from New Westminster police about what is happening.
