Tony Harris, the son of late car dealership and mobile phone mogul Tom Harris, will run in hopes of creating a tie between the Liberals and NDP-Green alliance in the legislature.
Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog won the mayoral race in that city last month, prompting the need for the by-election.
NDP MP Sheila Malcolmson, is seeking the BC NDP nomination for the by-election, which is expected to take place before the next budget is tabled in February.
