Man dies after altercation with police on Vancouver Island, watchdog investigating

SHAWNIGAN LAKE (NEWS 1130) – A police watchdog is asking the public for information after a man died in the hospital after an altercation with police on Vancouver Island Saturday.

According to the RCMP, they tried to use a taser on the man after he attacked them with a knife, and police fired their guns. The man was sent to Victoria General Hospital but died from his injuries.

No one else was hurt.

Police had gone to a call at a home on Millbay Road, Shawnigan Lake, about an assault.  They say they won’t be releasing any more information about what happened.

Now the Independent Investigations Office, B.C.’s civilian watchdog agency, is asking for anyone who witnessed the incident to call them at 1-855-446-8477.

IIO investigates all officer-related incidents when there is serious harm or death, or when there are allegations of wrongdoing.
