Gunfire between two cars in Surrey’s Fleetwood neighbourhood

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Another violent incident in Surrey has added fuel to the fight over whether to replace the RCMP in the city.

It happened Monday afternoon in the Fleetwood area near 153A St. and 80 Ave. Shots were apparently fired between two vehicles.

Witnesses say both cars were rushing down the street.

The RCMP says there evidence of shots fired, but no arrests have been made and no victims have been found.

Would a municipal police force have made a difference in this case? People have been quick to point fingers at what they see as insufficient policing, but when asked if a city force would actually improve things, many people we spoke with weren’t sure.

“I’ve lived here my whole life. If one isn’t doing their job right, why would another be any better?” said one man who lives in the area.

Surrey mayor Doug McCallum is pushing for a fast transition to a municipal police force. The province is pushing back, saying it’s not a quick process. The RCMP says McCallum’s comments make the Mounties’ job that much tougher on the street.
