Prosecution appealing acquittal of local police officers in Cuba, say families

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It looks like a legal ordeal for two local police officers isn’t over yet in Cuba.

Last week, we learned Cst. Mark Simms of the Vancouver Police Department and Cst. Jordan Long with the Port Moody Police Department would eventually be coming home after they were acquitted of charges involving a sexual assault.

Now, the two officers’ families say the prosecution is appealing the verdict, which was a unanimous decision from five female judges.

The families say they “expect that the truth and justice will continue to prevail as this process unfolds.”

Back in March, Simms was charged with the sexual assault of a 17-year-old. Long was held as a witness.

“Mark and Jordan and our families and friends have endured tremendous suffering in every area of our lives for the last eight months- emotional, physical, psychological, financial, spiritual and social,” said the families in the statement.

The families add the timelines are “unclear” and they have no idea when the two officers might be able to return home.

They are calling on the federal government to work with Cuban authorities to speed up the process.
