Ride-hailing legislation being introduced in Victoria

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s a long time coming, but we should be one step closer to having ride hailing services in B.C. after today.

The BC NDP government is set to introduce legislation, clearing the way for companies like Uber and Lyft to operate in the province.

The NDP had campaigned on a promise to introduce ride-hailing by the end of last year, but later pushed it back, pending study.

B.C. Greens leader Andrew Weaver said his party has continued pressure for legislation, noting he has brought in private member bills several times before. “This is what happens when you are forced to work together.”

Premier John Horgan said he is not expecting any opposition, when the time to vote arrives. He adds there will be “significant changes” to insurance packages for those who want to drive for those companies.

“There’s going to be additional criminal records checks. We want to make sure that the playing field is level for those that are already in the sector and those new entrants. A lot of work to do, but we’re confident that we’re well on our way and the legislation will set the table for that into the new year.”

However, even with legislation being introduced, you shouldn’t expect to see Uber or Lyft in business until at least next fall.

Meanwhile, hundreds of additional taxis could be on the roads in time for the holiday season. The Passenger Transportation Board has received applications to add more than 200 cabs by the end of 2018.
