Passenger who apparently hit Vancouver bus driver won’t see criminal charges

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Transit Police say they likely won’t be recommending criminal charges after a female passenger apparently hit a bus driver in Vancouver on Thursday afternoon, but they would like to speak with her if they can figure out who she is.

The driver yelled at the passenger to “get the hell off my bus” after she apparently hit him after she missed her stop. A video sent to NEWS 1130 shows the driver and passenger getting into a heated yelling match after the altercation.

But Anne Drennan with Transit Police says the driver doesn’t want to go ahead with any kind of criminal investigation.

“The Crown’s not going to proceed in a situation like this, when we’re talking about a slap on the arm, if the victim doesn’t believe he was in any kind of risk of injury and doesn’t want to proceed,” she says.

However, she says assaults on transit operators happen too frequently, though the numbers have been going down in the last few years.

“Having said that though, any assaults against bus drivers are too many and it’s always a situation where it can put not only the bus operator, but the passengers on the bus at risk,” she says.

Chris Bryan with TransLink also confirmed they had received a report that a driver was hit.

“The safety of our employees and passengers is our top priority,” he says in an email. “As the operator clearly stated in the video, assaults on operators can put the lives of many people at risk.”
