Two elderly women hospitalized with first degree burns, smoke inhalation after overnight Vancouver fires

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Two elderly women are in hospital, one with minor burns and the other suffering from smoke inhalation, after separate fires in Vancouver on Saturday.

An 80-year-old woman is recovering from first degree burns to her face, chest, arms and back after a fire broke out at an older building in the Fairview neighbouhood. Vancouver fire’s Assistant Chief of Operations Kevin Wilson says crews were called to the area of 8th avenue near Heather in Vancouver just after 2:30 a.m.

“It was knocked down very quickly, and they got her out within minutes,” he says. “It’s an older building, it’s non-sprinklered,” he adds. “At this point there is no indication of a working smoke alarm in the suite.”

Then, Wilson says, just after 10:30 a.m. firefighters responded to a house fire in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood and an elderly woman with smoke inhalation was taken to hospital. He says the fire started in the kitchen before spreading through the walls and ceiling, and clutter in the home made it difficult for crews to gain access.
