If you see 'Constable Scarecrow,' be prepared for real officers to be standing by

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – He looks like a cop and seems to act like a cop — but he’s a complete fake.

Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Michael McLaughlin says after a couple months on the road, “Constable Scarecrow” has had a big impact.

The life-sized metal poster was introduced in September. Since then, McLaughlin says it has prompted many drivers to slow down.

“He’s more effective than we originally hoped,” he said. “Even after two weeks in the same spot, we see a 50 per cent reduction in people going more than 10km/h over the speed limit. When you look at excessive speeders, it’s even more dramatic — 70 per cent less excessive speeders.”

Cst. Scarecrow is getting a year extension on his contract and is getting some upgrades.

“He’s being put up with heavier-gauge steel. We’ve added reflective tape to match the tape on his police uniform. It makes him more realistic and — we think — safer, as well,” McLaughlin said.

He adds if you see the life-sized poster and recognize it as such, you should still heed its presence.

“We don’t want people to get too used to him. So with more traffic enforcement officers around him, writing tickets, we hope that Cst. Scarecrow will continue to be really effective.”
