Local researcher says the moustache-growing fundraiser really does make a difference

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We are getting into the home stretch of another Movember campaign, and a local researcher says the annual moustache-growing fundraiser has made a big difference over the years.

“It’s been an amazing, amazing journey,” says Dr. John Oliffe, founder and lead of the Men’s Health Research Program at UBC.

He says the money raised every year is instrumental in achieving new breakthroughs.

“We’re deeply reliant on them as researchers to do great work with men, because there’s never really been a pocket of funding or support for men’s health,” he explains. “You know, we’ve had some sort of help from the Institutes of Health Research here, but really, Movember has been unprecedented in how much support they’ve given.”

He agrees Movember has played a huge role in raising awareness, not just about prostate cancer, but for men’s health in general.

“You know, issues around depression being under-diagnosed in men and then suicide being very high,” Oliffe says.

“I think the diversity has been very important for getting a really broad conversation about men’s health outside of prostate cancer, you know, getting into some of the mental health issues.”
