Man taken to hospital with ‘significant burns’ after house fire in Burnaby

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – A man has been taken to hospital after receiving what crews are calling “significant burns” in a house fire Tuesday night.

Fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused flames to erupt at the Burnaby house.

Crews were called to the blaze on Dundas Street about 8:00 p.m., where a basement suite kitchen went up in smoke.

“We found one fella on the back lawn who had sustained burns,” Assistant Fire Chief Barry Mawhinney says. “We assisted him, knocked the fire down, brought the patient to the back lane. B.C. Ambulance arrived and took over patient care.”

He says the fire was confined to the basement, which he describes as being in “pretty rough shape”, but adds some smoke did reach the upper two floors.

“We don’t have a definitive cause yet, it’s still under investigation,” Mawhinney says. “But, it was in the kitchen. Could have been a cooking fire, but that’s yet to be determined.”

It’s unclear what the man’s current condition is.
