For Palestinian children in Gaza, an education in conflict

GAZA, Palestinian Territory — Ever since Hamas launched demonstrations in March against Israel’s blockade of Gaza, children have been a constant presence in the crowds, some hurling stones, others watching from afar.

Since then, U.N. figures show that 948 Palestinians under 18 have been shot by Israeli forces and 2,295 have been hospitalized, including 17 who have had a limb amputated.

Israel blames Hamas for encouraging young Palestinians to approach the fence or using the large crowds of civilians as cover for attacks. The Palestinians say entire families are moved to protest by the misery inflicted by a decade-old Israeli and Egyptian blockade of the Hamas-ruled territory.
