Local mountains to get up to a meter of fresh snow by week’s end

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – All this rain down here could be a good thing up on the mountain tops.

Meteorologist Russ Lacate says while Tuesday’s rain may not be quite up to snuff, it’ll be the end of the week many skiers and boarders look forward to.

“Heavy snow on the local mountains, may become mixed with some rain as that freezing level elevates Tuesday,” says Lacate. But that’s only temporary as a series of mid-December storms roll in.

“Snowfall widespread across the ski-hills Wednesday afternoon and Thursday, and Friday we may get up to a meter of fresh snow by week’s end,” he adds.

Meanwhile, snowfall warnings have been issued for a number of B.C. highways, including the Coquihalla, which could see 20 to 25 centimetres of snow by Tuesday night.

Bob Gilowski with VSA Highway Maintenance says they will have up to nine maintenance vehicles on the Coquihalla to make sure there are no issues.

But Gilowski is reminding people to give the plows enough space to work.

“We just want to remind people to stay well away from those vehicles. Just let the men and women behind the wheel do their jobs safely and they will provide passage for you when it’s safe to do so,” he adds. “Whether it’s a plow truck, whether it’s a snow blower, or whether it’s a grater, just stay well back of that maintenance vehicle and allow them to do their jobs.”

The warning from Environment Canada stretches from Hope to Merritt.
