Rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Brace for another round of heavy rain.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for parts of Metro Vancouver, including Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge. The warning also covers the North Shore.

Heavy rain is expected late in the afternoon or early evening on Wednesday. Up to 60mm is expected to fall.

“The rainfall rates will ease on Thursday but the continued rainfall on top of what will fall tonight will add to the potential for localized flooding,” Environment Canada said Wednesday morning.

The downpours could cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Drivers should keep ensure their lights are on and leave plenty of space between their vehicle and the car in front of them.

Meanwhile, TransLink says they are keeping an eye on some of the stations after flooding caused heavy delays Tuesday afternoon.

Jill Drews with the transit authority says catch basins in the area of the Columbia Tunnel in New Westminster have been cleared again, along with some municipal basins nearby.

“We will also have maintenance staff on hand with pumps at the tunnel station to make sure that if there’s any flooding our response will be as quick as possible,” she adds.

Drews says the transit infrastructure is working as it should and expects service to run normally throughout the day.
