Surrey’s mayor and B.C.’s RCMP Deputy Commissioner to meet later this week

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — As the City of Surrey continues to push for a municipal police force, Mayor Doug McCallum is meeting with B.C. RCMP’s Deputy Commissioner.

Brenda Butterworth-Carr says the two will meet in a few days to discuss the planned transition to a municipal police force.

“We do have a meeting with the mayor this coming week and we look forward to that discussion with him,” Butterworth-Carr says.

“However we manage this it will be done well, with the sole goal of public safety in mind, and certainly, being able to continue to support the employees that are on the ground delivering the services.”

One of the topics she would like to take a closer look at is how much a transition to a municipal police force will cost the city, which McCallum says will about two years. For the time being, she says her goal is to do everything she can to support Surrey mounties.
