CRTC to step up fight against scam calls

CANADA (NEWS 1130) – You may have to deal with fewer scam calls, phone companies have exactly one year to implement a system that blocks unsolicited and illegitimate calls in their networks.

This is after the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) ordered service providers to put in place a system that would block calls from numbers that either exceed 15 digits or that can’t be dialled back.

Although the CRTC says there may be legitimate reasons to modify caller ID information, such as police services or domestic abuse shelters, it says more protection needs to be offered to Canadians when it comes to nuisance calls.

“We are confident that this latest decision will help reduce the number of illegitimate calls Canadians are forced to deal with regularly,” said CEO Ian Scott in a release. “A call-blocking system will provide them with an additional level of protection, while ensuring they continue to receive legitimate calls, and encourage providers to continue their work on this issue.”

According to the CRTC, Internet Protocol services and spoofing technology have made it easy for third parties to display any caller ID they want.

“The CRTC continues to work with its domestic and international partners to address unsolicited and illegitimate telemarketing calls,” read the release.
