Cost to repair White Rock pier torn by windstorm in the millions: city

WHITE ROCK (NEWS 1130) – The City of White Rock says the cost to fix the popular pier that was split in two during yesterday’s windstorms could be in the millions.

During a press conference on Friday, Mayor Darryl Walker said he’s already been in touch with both the provincial and federal governments about the damage and they’re hoping to get some help.

He said a full assessment of the damage could take weeks to complete, but noted the city is expecting the costs to be in the millions and will likely take months to repair.

“I can imagine it’s going to be into the millions. It doesn’t take very much these days to run up into the millions of dollars, so we suspect it will be something in that area,” he says.

This is after Thursday’s powerful windstorm torn the pier in two. One person had to be rescued by an Air Force helicopter from the broken pier.

“We’ve lost something that’s very important to us but we haven’t lost any lives and I think for that we were very, very fortunate and we thank our lucky stars,” added Walker.

In the future, he adds, the city could close off the pier during strong weather to prevent something like this from happening again.

In the meantime, he says they’re trying to make sure the public is safe, warning people to stay away from the area.

White Rock Fire Chief Phil Lemire said in the past, staff had always had time to block off the pier, but said Thursday’s storm came in quick and strong.
