Snowmageddon’ hits Sea to Sky; dozens of vehicles in the ditch

SQUAMISH (NEWS 1130) — There’s mayhem on Highway 99 Saturday evening – around 25 vehicles went into the ditch so far this evening on the Sea to Sky Highway near Squamish.

Calling it “snowmageddon,” Squamish RCMP is advising people to stay off the roads if possible between Squamish and Whistler. Even snow plows are having difficulty getting up some of the hills.

They’re even asking their own officers to avoid the area if they can. Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the region.

Andrea Macpherson with CityNews was travelling down the highway earlier this evening around 5 p.m.

“We saw cars spun out all over the place, we saw cars stuck in ditches, we saw cars pulled over with their four-way flashers on and we weren’t sure why,” she says. “As we were passing, we saw a lot of minor vehicle accidents.”

She said it didn’t seem like drivers were prepared for the conditions.

“People were spinning out, people were unable to get up the hills in front of them, people were pulled over, clearing snow off their cars which they should have done in the parking lot before they left,” she says.

Squamish RCMP says it could take two to three hours to travel between Squamish and Whistler this evening as road conditions remain difficult. Conditions north of Whistler are bad as well.
