Seinfeld fans celebrate ‘a Festivus for the rest of us’

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re tired of tinsel and holiday cheer, today is your day.

It’s Festivus, the non-commercial holiday that “Seinfeld” fans have celebrated every December 23rd since it appeared in an episode in 1997.

The holiday, created by George Costanza’s father, Frank, includes a Festivus dinner, The Airing of Grievances, Feats of Strength and an aluminum pole in place of a Christmas tree.

“The tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances,” Frank Costanza says in the episode. “I got a lot of problems with you people. Now you’re going hear about it.”

The character says he created the holiday when shopping for a gift for his son, when he realized there “has to be a better way,” and created a “Festivus for the rest of us.”

#Festivus was trending on Twitter on Sunday.
