Surrey RCMP found something unexpected when they conducted a bait package sting over the holidays: Good Samaritans

Three other men were arrested for taking the bait packages

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — What would you do if you found a bag full of electronics and jewelry in the mall right before Christmas?

After Surrey RCMP left a bait package unattended in two local malls, it seems most people would do the right thing.

Police say they were pleasantly surprised when seven Good Samaritans returned the packages to security guards or customer services, or watched over them hoping the rightful owner would return.

But not everyone was so nice.

Police say they caught three men in their thirties taking the package, all who have a history of property crimes or related offenses. They will appear in court at a later date.

“This is the first time our Property Crime Team has done a bait package project in Surrey,” Staff Sgt. Mike Hall says in a statement. “Only having three subjects steal the package compared to the seven individuals who did the right thing was quite refreshing, especially around the holiday season.”

The sting happened over five days with officers wearing plainclothes.
